Parsons BFA Portfolio

A Horse of A Different COlor - 2023

Griffin's Parsons BFA Portfolio is a tribute to his late grandmother, reflecting their shared love for the classic tale and movie, "The Wizard of Oz." This profound personal connection inspired Griffin to theme his portfolio around the story.

Lookbook

    The Princess

The look features an extravagant gown embellished with tambour beading in a floral pattern. The bodice is intricately detailed, boasting floral motifs made of dyed water bottles. Hundreds of man-hours were devoted to this dress, ensuring that every sequin is perfectly placed.

The gown's skirt is full of volume and texture, designed with layers of organza that create a dramatic, ethereal effect. Delicate beading and various translucent materials add depth and intrigue, making the dress seem as if it's floating on air.

Completing the ensemble is a bold, sculptural wig/headpiece that mirrors the high-fashion interpretation of Glinda’s iconic crown. It rises majestically above the model’s head in an elaborate construction of curls and floral accents, echoing the magical and regal nature of the character.

This piece is not only a tribute to Griffin's late Nana and her favorite movie but also a testament to his ability to fuse narrative and design into a breathtaking visual experience. The outfit captures the enchantment of the Wizard of Oz while showcasing his innovative approach to fashion design.

    The Witch

This piece captures the essence of the Wicked Witch with a modern, fashion-forward twist, exuding a dark allure that's both captivating and intimidating. The vivid green full-body suit serves as the canvas for an over-gown rich in detail and symbolism. This gown features countless pieces of Griffin's late Nana's costume jewelry, each hand-sewn to create a texture and depth that sparkles ominously in the light. These jewels not only enhance the garment’s visual impact but also infuse it with personal memories and significance, bridging family heritage with artistic expression.

The gown itself is structured yet fluid, with intricate layering that suggests a fusion of elegance and malevolence, much like the character it is inspired by. The textures are mixed, with matte and glossy finishes that play with light and shadow, embodying the complexity of the Wicked Witch’s persona.

Complementing the suit is a bespoke headpiece that mirrors the twisted and towering hairstyles often depicted in tales of sorcery and dark magic. This headpiece, along with the striking makeup and bold green skin tone, completes a transformation that is both theatrical and deeply expressive.

Griffin’s Witch ensemble is more than just a costume; it is a narrative piece that tells a story of loss, remembrance, and the enduring power of art to encapsulate personal histories and emotions in wearable form. This garment does not merely dress a character; it brings her to life through the lens of personal significance.

    The Monster

The Monster features an eclectic mix of textures and components that challenge traditional fashion norms while celebrating the spirit of innovation. Griffin has skillfully integrated recycled cassette tapes, which form part of the outfit's striking textures, adding a glossy, reflective quality that catches the light with every movement. Quilt toppers, left unfinished by his late Nana, have been transformed into patchwork elements that add a personal touch and a burst of color to the predominantly dark ensemble.

The incorporation of old telephone cords serves not only as an adornment but also as a testament to the interconnectedness of past and present technologies, symbolizing the Wizard’s own complex network of illusions and facades. Each piece of the outfit, from the segmented and structured jacket to the heavily adorned pants, is meticulously crafted to convey a sense of controlled chaos, much like the Wizard’s own hidden machinations behind the curtain.

The helmet headpiece crowns the look with a futuristic appeal, its sharp and angular lines reminiscent of a warrior’s armor, yet distinctly urban in their aesthetic. The helmet, combined with the overall dark palette and illuminated accessories, contributes to an otherworldly silhouette that encapsulates the mysterious and powerful character of the Wizard.

The Monster is not just a costume but a narrative sculpture that walks the line between art and fashion, inviting viewers to unravel the stories woven into its fabric. It’s a bold statement on the transformative power of creativity and a tribute to the enduring influence of familial bonds and memories.
